8 Reasons Why I’m Thankful for Ashtanga

1. Detachment vs Effort
Realizing that there’s always tomorrow to try, and try again. There will always be another practice to perfect the imperfectable, no need to beat myself up if I don’t get it right the first time.

2. The value of daily practice
Seeing what I do on my mat now still amazes me every time I step back and look at where I started, in November 2009, and way back when in Singapore. It’s also helped with the writing, the photography, the baking, the pitching, the networking….the rest of life. Teaching me that everything which is worth working for, takes time.

3. Hope & Optimism for the apparently impossible
Product of #1 and #2.

4. Body awareness
When you spend an hour or two, a few days a week tuning into your body, you begin to realize that there’s more to you than your mind. That those sensations – good, bad, dull – are all a part of you., manifesting the constant dynamic that is life.

5. Community
The silent, occasionally social, community of the shala. The empowering, inspiring, supportive community of the blogosphere. Both groups of people who share my values that there’s more to life than ambition and climbing the corporate ladder/social hierarchy.

6. Strength
Physical strength, most noticeably, but also, slowly, mental strength. What must follow from this, is emotional strength. One breath at a time.

7. Increased productivity
When you’re bright and perky at 830am after conquering some major anxieties and mental roadblocks first thing out of bed, it can only be a good day.

8. Manduka + Lululemon
A dedicated practice requires dedicated gear. Whatever anyone else says about the commercialism of yoga, of showing skin and skimpy clothes, my practice is all the better because of these two brands.
